RE: 2009 Proposed Aquatic Invasive Species Controlled Treatment
As discussed and approved at our 2008 annual meeting, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) has given conditional approval for the District’s controlled chemical treatment plan of Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) on Long Lake in 2009. Approximately mid to late May 2009, up to 108 acres EWM on Long Lake will be treated with aquatic herbicide Navigate 2-4-D and Liquid(2-4-D) herbicide DMA-4 . This treatment supports our approved Aquatic Plant Management Plan for Long Lake. The US Army Corps will be involved in the monitoring of the application and evaluation of the AIS Treatment on Long Lake as part of a research project they are conducting in conjunction with the WI Department of Natural Resources.
It is important to note that any riparian owners who use the lake water for irrigation or drinking water purposes refrain for doing so for a period time. Past studies show his time period to be 7-14 days. After the 2009 treatment is completed, information will be posted on the District Website so as to inform that you can begin to use the lake water for irrigation or drinking water. Any additional water restrictions during the day of treatment will be posted at the boat landing and along the shoreline of the treatment areas.
Attached is a copy of the map of the proposed treatment areas. Wisconsin Law requires all riparian property owners within 150 feet of the proposed treatment areas be sent a copy of the Controlled Treatment Permit prior to the date of treatment. This documentation was sent by mail. The actual day of treatment in May will be determined depending upon the pre-treatment survey completed and the lake’s water temperature. Once a date has been finalized we will post that date on our Long Lake of Phelps Lake District Website.
